Scroll Hut: A Biomimetic Pavilion

Emulating Nature's Patterns and Strategies

The Scroll Hut, designed by Hiroyuki Futai + EP3, is a unique biomimetic pavilion that draws inspiration from the emergence of a fern frond. With its transformation system between bracket lights and a roof, this pavilion showcases the seamless merging of traditional design motifs and modern electronic technologies.

Responding to the light, the Scroll Hut exhibits a mesmerizing morphing effect between different geometries. One is the swirl form of a fern, representing nature's biological patterns, while the other is the triangular form of an architectural roof. This distinctive feature sets the Scroll Hut apart from other pavilions, creating a livable architecture that captivates the senses.

The construction of the Scroll Hut involves the assembly of 40 sets of scroll systems, each equipped with sensors and actuators. During the day, the scrolls roll out to become a translucent roof shade, providing a comfortable space within the pavilion. The photo sensors in each system monitor the daylight shifts, allowing the scrolls to roll out and back individually with the help of stepping motors. At night, the scrolls roll back to the ends and transform into bracket lights, illuminating the pavilion.

With dimensions of 2300mm in height, 2310mm in width, and 5630mm in length, the Scroll Hut stands as an architectural marvel that seamlessly integrates nature-inspired design and cutting-edge technology.

Located in Tokyo, the Scroll Hut project began in April 2011 and was completed in October 2014. It represents a small yet ambitious experiment in the integration of digital technology and architectural space. By decentralizing the transformation system, the pavilion ensures that it continues to function as a whole, even in the event of partial malfunctions. The use of spring steel strips further assists in the smooth rolling back process of the scrolls.

Despite being developed on a limited budget of $3,000, the Scroll Hut overcame various creative, technical, and research challenges. The transformation system was continuously improved and simplified during the prototyping phase. In the fabrication phase, common materials were used for the scrolls and frames, while electronic parts were soldered by hand. Specific parts, such as pulleys and rails, were customized using a 3D printer and a laser cutter. The final assembly was also carried out by students, showcasing the collaborative effort behind this self-built pavilion.

The Scroll Hut serves as a gathering space for students, providing a tranquil environment for breaks during the school semester. After each semester, it is temporarily moved to the grassy area between school buildings, where students can enjoy playing around its unique space.

The Scroll Hut has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2016. This prestigious award acknowledges the pavilion's outstanding expertise, innovation, technical characteristics, and artistic skill. The Scroll Hut leaves a lasting impression, evoking positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
